Annoying the night watch (D0, MN, open)

Frustrated by fitful attempts at sleep, Masao quietly found his way above deck and over to a small, clear space to sit. He'd left his flute in his bunk, given the hour, so that at least was some consolation for the crew on night watch who weren't shy about glaring at him for being up. In the limited light from a couple of lamps and a less than spectacular moon, he knew he shouldn't be up. But his mind was unsettled and keeping him awake, even though he seemed to have his thoughts all to himself for now.
Masao sat on the deck, his katana in its saya across his lap, and took a couple of attempts at meditating. That didn't seem to be working either, though, as he finally gave up and pivoted to look at the moon -- or at last that part that was visible tonight.
